Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Chrome Hitch Ball Installation

Hey, guys. it's Jake here with etrailer. Today I'm gonna show you how to put a new ball on your weight distribution head. Now, to explain a little bit about why you would need to go through this process. First thing is, if you're just like our situation and you need to put a ball on your kit that did not come with one, that's the reason you'd have to do it. If you take a look at this one here, you can see some marring on the ball itself.

And as time goes on, that is only going to get worse, because you'll have little pockets where dirt and debris can hang out in rocks, and stuff like that. They'll get trapped in there, and then when you go to put your trailer down on it and you drive for a couple hundred miles, it's gonna keep grinding that down. And then what was a two and five 16ths ball is no longer two and five 16ths. That's gonna cause more wear on the ball, more wear on the coupler, and just more wear in general. So having a nice, clean setup is definitely gonna help you get down the road safely.

Now, another reason you'd go through this process is if you had a camper that, or a trailer, that had a two inch ball on your weight distribution, and you're upgrading to a two and five 16ths. That's gonna be another reason why you would want to go through this process to swap out this ball. We've got our two and five 16ths ball that we're taking a look at today. We've actually got a new Reese weight distribution head here. And essentially, to start the process, you'll need to do one of two things.

You'll either need to put your ball in a vice, like we have here. There's two flat sides on the edge of the ball. You can obviously see we have it flipped over here. You'll want this upside down if you have a vice that's this heavy. Now, the torque setting for this is going to depend on the size of the shank.

Ours is an inch and a quarter shank. You wanna make sure that that matches the hole in your weight distribution. But you wanna match the torque specs for the size shank that you have. Usually, when you get the ball in your package, it'll say what to torque it down to. So since we're putting it on this, we're gonna take our head, flip it over, and set it on there just like that. Now we'll take the lock washer, slide it over, followed by the nut. We'll thread this down all the way by hand till it's tight. Now, no matter what size shank that you're gonna have on the ball, you're gonna have, it's gonna be a pretty high torque setting. So you'll need to either rent a torque wrench. We've got this four foot torque wrench. It comes in handy when we're doing this kind of stuff, but maybe check with a local shop. They may be able to torque it down for you if you get it assembled. Or you can typically rent one about this size from your local auto parts store. So now we'll just need to take our wrench, and torque it down. Now, what we ended up having to do is, we've got a large socket here, and we're using a inch and 13/16 socket. That's what you'll need to fit over that nut. We're using an extension, because the head of our torque wrench is not able to fit in here. When you're using an extension to do this, you wanna make sure that it is going to be an impact, because otherwise, if you use a chrome extension, it's going to twist. But this should not twist. And we'll get it tightened down. With your ball torque down properly onto your weight distribution, that's gonna do it for the installation.

  • Hitch Extender for 10,000 lb Travel Trailer Compatibility
I wish you would have asked this question prior to your purchase of the Curt Extender # C45791, because this extender will not work for your application. It is rated for the 3,500 lb total trailer weight towing capacity and because it is an adapter will also decrease your tongue weight rating of your trailer hitch by 50%. Instead, you may want to consider the Brophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitch # BH20. This ball mount is capable of towing 10,000 lbs and has a measurement of 13-1/4 inches...

  • Differences Between The Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution Hitches # C17499 And # C17501
The difference between the Curt TruTrack # C17501 and # C17499 are their weight capacities and the # C17501 comes with a 2-5/16" hitch ball already installed, whereas the # C17499 would require you to purchase one and torque it down yourself. The heads are slightly different so while you could most likely just swap out the Trunnion bars on the # C17501 with the lower rated # C17535 I recommend just getting the # C17499 and a 2-5/16" hitch ball like # 19286. You can typically use or rent...

The most important thing to know when selecting a weight distribution system is your total tongue weight, which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2016 Ram 1500. Your total tongue weight needs to be in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity in order for the system to work effectively. • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2018 Keystone Summerland 1750RD
The most important thing to consider when picking out a weight distribution system is the total tongue weight of your setup. This number includes the loaded tongue weight of the trailer (as if it's ready for a trip) along with any added cargo weight you might have loaded behind the rear axle of your F-250. Ideally this number falls comfortably within the operating range of the system you choose. Based on my research your 2018 Keystone Summerland 1750RD Trailer does indeed have an empty...

  • How To Mount Weight Distribution Hitch On 2021 Intech Flyer Discover W/ Completely Covered A-Frame
There is a weight distribution hitch option for your new 2021 Intech Flyer Discover with a completely covered A-frame. Instead of using a standard weight distribution hitch which has brackets that go around the frame you will need to use a weight distribution hitch that is compatible with bolt on brackets. I looked up the specs on your 2021 Intech Flyer Discover and found it has a GVWR of 5200lbs. Since tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the trailer weight you should expect to see 520-780lbs...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 6,000 lb Camper Trailer
You'd be fine to have a weight distribution installed on your trailer as you travel on the hill you described. If anything it might help prevent the trailer from leaning excessively. For a 6,000 lb trailer you'd be looking at a tongue weight most likely of 600 to 900 lbs so the weight distribution with sway control that I would recommend is the Strait Line part # RP66084 which has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs and features only sway control designed to fight sway before it starts. • Is a Weight Distribution System Required for Towing a 3,000 lb Trailer
Any time you are towing a trailer that has a fully loaded weigh that is over 50 percent of the vehicle's gross weight, a weight distribution system is recommended. If your vehicle weighs less than 6,000 lbs, a weight distribution system and trailer brakes should be used when towing a 3,000 lb trailer. Assuming that the 3000 lb figure you mentioned represents the fully loaded and ready to tow weight of the trailer, the tongue weight will be between 300-450 lbs, plus the weight of any cargo...

This system will give you a stronger system that will also allow you greater ground clearance. This system will handle much better for you as you travel down the road as well as when you are loading and unloading. The sharp angles won't be a problem with this system. Your best option is going to be the Reese Strait Line part # RP66084 as it has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs which would be perfect for your tongue weight of 725 lbs. The sway control on this system is the only style on the market that actively works to prevent sway before it starts. The other very popular option is the Equalizer WD system part # EQ37101ET which would also work great with 725 lbs of tongue weight but instead uses 4 point of friction for sway control. The longest ball mount we offer is theBrophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitch - 3/4" Rise, 2" Drop - 13-1/4" Long - 10,000 lbs # BM20 which measures 13-1/4" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. Now the # BM20 has a 10,000lb trailer weight rating, and 1,000lb tongue weight rating. If your loaded tongue weight is 1,050 lbs then the Reese Weight Distribution system part # RP66542 would work well as it has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs which would work well for you. The only setup that would be better would be the Strait Line part # RP66084 as it has the same tongue weight range but has a sway control system that stops sway before it starts. This gives you a much better ride quality and since this uses chains it will be a little quieter than a system that mounts solely with brackets.
